Somerset Public Library, in Somerset, Wisconsin hired Crescendo in 2017 for a feasibility study which led to a successful $3.5M capital campaign, securing more than the original goal. **Kay is President of the Somerset Public Library Board of Trustees, a position she has held for four decades. She also served as Co-chair of the campaign in addition to serving as one of the original founders of the library in the 1970’s.
What is your personal favorite space in the new addition to the library?
There are many special spaces – History Room, expanded meeting rooms, and a unique space known as the “Makers Space” but my favorite is the Quiet Room designed with a soothing fireplace, comfortable chairs, many windows and a quiet place to relax and read a good book!
What most excites you about the future of the Somerset library?
The Library has and is providing an “energizing, empowering, and enriching” center to the local community and area. In 2022, there was a 54% increase in people visiting the library, 359 new library card holders, and 3,178 library program participants. We also added a new sensory space room for preschool children, formed an official Friends of the Somerset Library organization, held many children programs, and had many organizations effectively utilizing use of the new meeting rooms.
Is there anything new you would like to highlight?
A visit by a local author is coming in May. Additionally, patrons can access our calendar of events at www.somersetlibrary.org and experience a virtual tour of the new expanded library on the website.
What was your experience like working with Crescendo?
Ellen Hongerholt and the Crescendo staff – with their experience and knowledge – led us through a successful planning study program involving many local people and groups, which effectively determined that we would be able to conduct a Capital Campaign to raise $2.5 million dollars – we eventually raised $3.5M. Crescendo’s professional experience and implementation of fundraising strategies provided us with the planning tools and materials needed for a successful campaign.
What do you feel was the biggest impact that Crescendo made on raising the funds for the new library?
The individual interviews that Ellen held with local people were key steps in the process. Crescendo’s ability to guide the various planning committees in preparing promotional materials for the campaign was highly impactful. Also the successful kickoff “Launch Party” to the Capital Campaign that Ellen and Crescendo staff coordinated was a major step that solidified the success and launch of the project.
